Why We Prefer Dunkin’ Donuts Over Starbucks

Why We Prefer Dunkin Over Starbucks

One of the big questions that people ask each other up here in the Northeast of the United States is what do you prefer better Starbucks or Dunkin. Of course, Dunkin used to be Dunkin’ Donuts but now they just go by Dunkin. While the pandemic might’ve stopped some people from buying coffee on the road as they used to before Covid hit, it can be argued pretty easily now that people are back on the road probably more than ever as there are so many people that don’t like to take public transportation. Being back on the road means stopping and getting hot coffee along the way. In New York, as well as New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and a few other States in the Northeast, Dunkin’ Donuts is a pretty popular stop. Of course, Starbucks is a popular stop pretty much all around the world.

It’s all about drive-throughs in the Northeast. People love to get their coffee in the drive-through. Starbucks knows that very well as lately, they have been closing many of their walk in only Starbucks. The majority of Dunkins are also drive-throughs. For this article, I asked a lot of people if they had to choose between Dunkin or Starbucks which one would they choose. This is a question I’ve always thought about myself, hence the title and the word we in the title. Additionally, this is more than just thinking about it, it’s what we have chosen in the real world. Which one of these legendary coffee houses do we stop at more throughout the week and weekends?

While both coffee chains obviously specialize in coffee as their main draw, both chains offer different items while also competing across-the-board on some very popular beverages that multiple generations prefer.

The Youth

As I also work in a school as a teacher, I see on a daily basis in the mornings what students and teachers are bringing in to school with them to drink in the morning. It seems Starbucks is a fad for young female teens. They all like to walk into school in the mornings with their Frappuccino and other frozen Starbucks drinks. It’s pretty much a fashion statement it seems. However most of the teachers you’ll see walking in with a Dunkin coffee. Usually a large Dunkin coffee. There are those that come in with their 7-Eleven cups and that’s a story for a different article. But it’s unusual to see a teacher walking in with a Starbucks cup of coffee as opposed to a Dunkin cup of coffee. There are some, but the majority are walking in with a cup of Dunkin.

The Adults

When I ask my friends and my colleagues and just about everybody else we talked to for this article why they prefer drinking Dunkin’ Donuts instead of Starbucks, the answer almost all of the time is that Starbucks coffee is just too strong. Pretty much, everybody, I know who has answered the question feels that Dunkin coffee is just so smooth. Dunkin coffee is not too strong it’s not too weak, it’s just right. Additionally, it’s pretty much always fresh.

If the taste alone is not important enough to choose Dunkin over Starbucks, well there are other factors as to why we like Dunkin better than Starbucks. One very important reason for many of us is Dunkin has much better hours than Starbucks. In fact, many of the Dunkin restaurants are open 24 hours a day. How many times have Dunkin restaurants saved many people late at night who are looking for that one cup of coffee to keep them driving those extra miles? Of course, there are many people who wake up for work early in the morning, especially in the Northeast where there’s so much traffic. There’s nothing like having a Dunkin open at 4 AM to get a large coffee to help you get into work. Try finding a Starbucks that’s open a four in the morning. You’re not gonna find it.

No don’t get us wrong, we still really like Starbucks. Any coffee aficionado is still going to enjoy a good cup of Starbucks coffee. However, if we’re drinking coffee every day we’re gonna have to make a choice as to where we’re going to go a little bit more than the other and that is easily Dunkin. Of course, it’s pretty hard to top a fresh Dunkin’ Donut. You’re not gonna find anything like a Dunkin’ Donuts at Starbucks. OK, now Starbucks does have some nice pastries but they are usually not as fresh as Dunkin’ Donuts.

We also prefer Dunkin’ Donuts muffins over Starbucks muffins. Dunkin also has some great ham, egg, and cheese wraps and their egg sandwiches on a croissant are not too bad either. We would rather get one at a good deli, but sometimes you just can’t get to one.

We are still trying to figure out why they took the donuts out of Dunkin’ Donuts but I guess they have their reasons. Nonetheless, if we had to choose between the two, we easily prefer Dunkin. We just wish they still made their donuts at the individual stores like they used to back in the 1970s. Those donuts were incredible.
