Why we Prefer McDonald’s Over Wendy’s article looks at the long battle between fast food burgers and chicken joints over the years and the unique rivalry between Mcdonald’s and Wendy’s. For years the battle was usually between Burger King and McDonald’s for your fast food dollar. However, Wendy’s has pretty much taken over the rivalry at least in the fast food burger wars. Although Burger King is still number two in sales. This article will look at the history of each restaurant defined by their there strengths and weaknesses in pitting them against each other.
McDonald’s History
McDonald’s was first founded in 1940. The legendary chain was run by Richard and Maurice McDonald, in the city of San Bernadino on the West Coast Of the United States. The restaurant would not gain fame until it was discovered by Ray Kroc who would eventually buy the restaurant from the McDonald’s brothers in 1955. Ray Kroc would turn his purchase into the most successful fast food chain of all time. They are not only the most successful and most recognized restaurant chain in the world, but they are the largest.
McDonald’s has taken a lot of hits over the years by many critics and health experts criticizing what they view as an unhealthy menu. The chain was forced to make some changes in their super size menu in the 2000s when documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock released a highly critical film in 2004 entitled Super Size Me attacking the chain. Still despite the film’s success, McDonald’s is still the largest fast food chain in the world.
Wendy’s History
Wendy’s was founded in the late 1960s in the city of Columbus Ohio by Dave Thomas. No other businessman in history also promoted his business on national tv ads as Dave Thomas did. Many people thought he might have been an actor, but after a while, his appearances began to have a genuine effect. There were many other successful ads over the years like the Wheres The Beef? campaigns, yet it was Dave Thomas who seemed to score the most points.
Wendy’s is most aware of the challenges Mcdonald’s has faced with the criticism over their unhealthy menus. In response to those observations, Wendy’s has heavily promoted their healthy food items like their fresh salads and burgers with fresh ingredients.
In order to help cement our argument over why we prefer McDonald’s over Wendy’s, we thought we would break it down by pitting their most popular items against each other.
French Fries – Winner: McDonald’s
This one was easy. Hands down, McDonald’s has the best French Fries in the fast food world. You just can’t eat one. By the time you get home from the drive-through, most of them are gone. They taste so good, we are a little scared as to how they do it. Wendy’s French Fries are probably one of the worst we have ever tasted in the fast food business Even worse is that they are usually soggy and cold. Come on Wendy’s you need to come up with some better fries.
Chicken Sandwiches – Winner: Wendy’s
We don’t know what it is, but McDonald’s has never really been able to come up with a good chicken sandwich. They have tried many different versions, but we have never really enjoyed any of them, On the other hand, Wendy’s Chicken Sandwiches are delicious. They may not be as good as Chick-fil-A or Popeyes but they are much better than McDonald’s .
Burgers – Winner: McDonald’s
Two words, BIG MAC! Nothing comes close to matching the magnificence and success of the Big Mac. There are many different burgers on the menus of both Mcdonald’s and Wendy’s but the Big Mac just blows everything away.
Fish Sandwiches – Winner: McDonald’s
This is another easy one. McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish sandwich is another one of the chain’s legendary sandwiches which will never go away. For the most part, Wendy’s doe not even have a fish sandwich on their menus. Ocassiionaly, they will bring one back for a short period of time, but if you not going to keep it on the menus, you don’t even deserve to compete.
Shakes – Winner: McDonald’s
There are those that love Wendy’s Frostys. We agree they are really good. But have you ever been able to drink a Frosty out of a straw? I think we can agree that one should be able to drink a shake. McDonald’s Vanilla shake is just a dream come true.
Salads – Winner: Wendy’s
Like their Chicken Sandwich, McDonald’s has never been able to hit a home run with their salads. In fact, they can barely get on base with them. On the other hand, the only reason we usually visit Wendy’s is for their salads. This is where Wendy’s really scores points for freshness. Year-round we love their Apple Pecan Salad. However, in the summer, Wendy’s Summer Strawberry Salad scores the highest points.
Out of the six major categories that we pitted Mcdonald’s against Wendy’s; McDonald’s won four of them, while Wendy’s only rose to the top in two. In the end, our argument as to why we prefer Mcdonald’s over Wendy’s was an easy one to make. Which do you prefer? Let us know in the comments.
