Many people in the United States are not familiar with the concept of one of Germany’s most treasured recreational activities. However, one day in Germany will completely enlighten one’s knowledge of Beer Gardens. During a recent trip to Germany, we experienced firsthand the joy of Beer Garden culture. For those who do not really understand the concepts of Beer Gardens, we will break it down for you.
Beer Gardens are basically food and beverage (beer, beer, beer) establishments that set up outdoor seating usually under a tent and surrounded by trees. The outdoor area is anchored by a restaurant that also serves as a brewery. The seating under the tent is usually comprised of long tables with bench seating. The point of the tight quarters and bench seatings is to promote the social aspects of beer drinking. However, many Beer Gardens also utilize individual tables and chairs. They are usually just placed right up against each other.

The main reason most locals spend so much time at Beer Gardens in Germany is for the beer. It’s as simple as that. Of course, the food always plays an important role as well as the entire social aspect of consuming the beer together. However, once you taste that locally brewed German Beer, you will understand, yes, it’s all about the beer!
In most German Cities, there are Beer Gardens everywhere. Some of them are well-known establishments that have been serving the German people for years. On our recent visit to Cologne, Germany, and Munich Germany were surrounded by German Beer Gardens that are hundreds of years old. In Cologne, Germany, the Brauhaus Sion has been serving people for over 800 years. We had an amazing meal at the Brauhaus Sion. Their brewery brews one of the best beers in Germany.

Travelers will find Beer Gardens in places such as Japan, Australia, Canada, and the United States. One of the most famous Beer Gardens in the world is located in Munich Germany. The Hirschgarten Beer Garden is known as the largest Beer Garden in all of Europe. The Hirschgarten has seating for 9000 people. The Hirschgarten is located close to public transportation so it’s easy to get to from anywhere in Munich. Besides the Beer, the Hirschgarten also offers a complete menu io fantastic authentic Bavarian food featuring pretzels to die for and potato salad, unlike any potato salad you have ever tasted. If you are in Munich Germany, the Hirschgarten should not be missed.
Many people who travel often scoff at the notion of taking a seat in a Beer Garden. There are many who just don’t drink beer. However, it’s the culture of the Beer Garden that should not be missed. Additionally, even if you’re not a beer drinker, one sip of that fresh brewed German beer may change your mind. It is unbelievably good.
