In 1933, Lewis and Vernon Rudolph worked for their uncle who ran a general store in Paducah, Kentucky. It was here Vernon would learn the art of making donuts before moving a year later to Nashville, Tennessee to start up The Krispy Kreme Doughnut Company. Vernon’s brother, Rudolph, opened up his first store in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1937. This marked the beginning of the era of Krispy Kreme Donuts which would expand to well over one thousand locations across the United States, as well as other parts of the world. The well-protected family secret recipe that makes some of the best donuts keeps customers coming back for more.
The top ten Krispy Kreme Donuts worthy of mention are as follows:
#10 – Glazed Raspberry Filled
Many donut fans are especially fond of the product when there’s a burst of fruit jelly coming out of it after taking the first big bite. In the case of Krispy Kreme’s Glazed Raspberry Filled donut, nothing compares to this extraordinary donut. It’s sweet and tart and goes so well as a companion with coffee. Actually, it goes well with just about anything you happen to be drinking. What’s great about this donut, as is the case with most of Krispy Kreme’s baked goods, is it doesn’t taste artificial. Despite the changing times and some of the shortcuts many franchises have taken to curb costs for maximum profit, Krispy Kreme holds true to what made them great, to begin with.
#9 – Chocolate Iced Raspberry Filled
Jelly-filled donuts are among the favorites as a choice whenever customers arrive at a donut shop to place an order. At Krispy Kreme, a Chocolate Iced Raspberry Filled donut has earned its place as among the best of the best. Is it the chocolate icing that wins fans over or is it the raspberry filling stuffed inside? It’s both. This is what happens when a Glazed Raspberry Doughnut goes to a chocolate factory and comes out as a changed product. The cute little swirl of raspberry icing on top makes this donut stand out even further with a classic “here I am” statement.
#8 – Chocolate Iced with Custard Filling
When a donut gets filled up with a tasty custard filling inside, then iced on top with chocolate, this is the closest thing to baked sweetness as it gets. As popular as jelly-filled donuts have known to be, there’s something custard fillings pull off they can’t. Speaking as someone who used to work for a donut shop once upon a time, it was always the Chocolate Iced with Custard Filling donuts that flew off the shelves faster than we could keep up baking them. Krispy Kremes knows this is a winning recipe that combines the best of three worlds, namely chocolate, custard, and donuts.
#7 – Cake Batter
If you’re into the sweetest donut your teeth can sink into, Krispy Kreme’s Cake Batter would be the perfect product for you. The filling inside tastes just like cake batter. The bright yellow icing is generously spread across the top of this cake donut, along with a rain of colorful sprinkles. This is the donut that pops out among the dozen sitting inside the box. It also pops inside the mouth. So, if you’re feeling sleepy and want a sweet pick-me-up, this would be the donut for you.
#6 – Powdered Cinnamon Cake
The Powdered Cinnamon Cake donut by Krispy Kreme is not a treat to be taken lightly. Make sure you have a glass of cold milk to wash it down. Plus, the two work so well together as a tasty treat as one devours each luxurious bite after another. The powder does leave a mess but who cares if you’re having fun eating this delicious donut? Guaranteed to bring the kid in you out, this is the kind of donut that could easily pass as a dessert option after a meal.
#5 – Glazed Blueberry Cake
When a cake donut is bursting with flavor, that’s more than enough reason to become a loyalist to the product. In the case of Krispy Kreme’s Glazed Blueberry Cake donut, this is especially true. This is a beautifully tart and moist donut that other donut shops have tried to copy as a Krispy Kreme contender. So far, nobody has really been able to pull it off, at least according to the fans of this donut. It’s a wonderful step away from the norm without overdoing it. Whenever in Quebec or Ontario, this particular Western Canadian tends to favor the Glazed Blueberry Cake as a breakfast option that goes so well with my morning coffee. Usually, I have to order two of them as I think my husband is even more addicted to the flavor than I am. This is a “must-have” each time we’re on the road.
#4 – Chocolate Iced
One thing is for certain, people love their chocolate. When this is used as icing for a delicious, fluffy donut, it’s a heavenly experience. What could be better than a Krispy Kreme Chocolate Iced donut? Among donut connoisseurs, nothing. Its chocolatey goodness is sweet enough that doesn’t need anything more added to it. This goes really well with a cappuccino if I do say so myself.
#3 – Chocolate Iced with Sprinkles
What could possibly outdo a Krispy Kreme Chocolate Iced donut? According to kids of all ages, it would be Chocolate Iced with Sprinkles. While the chocolate glaze spread across the top of the donut is wonderfully sweet, adding a healthy dose of candied sprinkles on top is what makes this treat even tastier. When placed inside a box of dozen assorted donuts, this is usually among the first to go.
#2 – Glazed Chocolate Cake
Cake donuts are already a big favorite among consumers who love the sweetness each bite brings. When in the form of Krispy Kreme’s Glazed Chocolate Cake donut, the experience is even better. If you’re a fan of donuts and chocolate cake, this is the one for you. Speaking on a personal note, this goes really well with a tall glass of milk. I know of one family in particular that managed to convince their kids to leave out a covered plate of glazed chocolate cake donuts with a glass of milk for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve instead of going with cookies. The kids were told they’ll get better presents that way. Apparently, it worked because those same kids did the same to their own as soon as they became parents themselves.
#1 – Original Glazed
The Krispy Kreme Original Glazed donut was the very item that paved the road to success for Lewis and Vernon Rudolph when they opened up their humble little shops in Tennessee and North Carolina. When Vernon Rudolph first opened up in Winston-Salem, he had customers flocking to his shop while he had these donuts freshly baked. Realizing this sweet and fluffy masterpiece was the golden ticket to becoming a franchise, the Rudolphs treated this donut with extra special care to make sure theirs remained on top as America’s favorite donut.
Speaking as someone who has tried this, bear in mind I’m a Canadian. I never heard of Krispy Kreme Donuts until 2003, two years after a location popped up in Mississauga, Ontario. I was driving across Canada during the fall season and the family I visited brought two boxes. One was kept out while the other was kept in the freezer. The family made the mistake of allowing me to try this glazed donut. I was in love upon the first bite. I wound up striking a deal with the family to buy the box of original glazed donuts they had in the freezer so I had something to enjoy as I drove back home to Edmonton, Alberta.
That box never did reach my home province. It made it to the hotel I stopped at just east of Winnipeg, Manitoba, but no further. Instead of ordering a real meal as a sane person should do, I wolfed down all twelve of the original glazed donuts while watching a movie on television. When I shared my story once I made it home, I learned one of my coworkers at the time made it an annual habit that each time she visited the state of Ohio she would come back with at least three boxes of these donuts. She stored them in the freezer and only take out what was needed. Because of me, she wound up having to buy an additional box.
